2017 La Cave des Nomades 'Le Pirate qui Chante'
Grape/s: Grenache Noir
Incredibly high quality, precise, red fruited Grenache grown on pure schist. This is grand wine from undeniably profound terroir and mature old vines. There are layers upon layers of delicious red fruit and minerality and the wine has a more vertical structure than the sleek 2016.
Wine making in 2017 was done with more minerality in mind. As such, Jose allowed this to macerate for a month before pressing to barrel.
The final wine opens with red fruit and this year really sings both of the schist soil and the mediterranean sun. 2017 was an early, dry-ish year and this has also produced small berries with lots of flavour and nice thick skins.
The 2017 Le Pirate qui Chante is, for my palate, the greatest vintage that Jose has produced of this wine. Right now it's a wine that makes me think of a dimly lit bistro in winter and a bowl of warming stew - it's serious and delicious. However, it also has really beautiful balance and will definitely mature and develop wonderfully over the next 15-20 years.
